What is a nanny care philosophy? That is a great question which I hear often from both parents and nannies.

A nanny care philosophy is going to tell the story of how a nanny approaches nanny care and what that care style means to the nanny.

Check out my latest video where I cover the importance of nanny care philosophies, how to create your own, and what to do once you have determined a philosophy to use.

What is a nanny care philosophy?

That’s a really good question.

A care philosophy is going to tell the story of how a nanny approaches nanny care and what that care style means to them.

Think of it as kind of a framework that you operate within as a nanny.

Why do I need a nanny care philosophy?

Your care philosophy is going to convey to families what they can expect out of the nanny care that you deliver.

It will tell them about how you approach certain scenarios, what their child’s day might look like with you, and how you like to partner with parents to ensure that the goals for nanny care are being met.

How do I develop a care philosophy?

The first step to developing your care philosophy is just to brainstorm, right?

Make a list of things that are important to you with guiding or delivering nanny care.

This could be how you approach big feelings with a toddler, or perhaps even how you like to structure the day with your nanny child.

And don’t forget to include how you handle interactions with the parents as well, because how you like to work together with them is an important part of your nanny care philosophy.

You’re also going to want to spend some time doing some research.

I recommend checking out different care or parenting philosophies.

Check out thought leaders in early childhood education and different schools of thought.

This could be social media research on TikTok or YouTube; those are great resources. Or even a simple Google search.

Maybe you’ve heard of the Montessori method or Love and Logic, but you don’t really know what those are about.

And you spend some time learning what each method involves.

Naming a method can be a great way to quickly convey all of the things that that particular philosophy encompasses.

If you’re discussing philosophies with a parent, for example, be ready to go into more detail if needed.

I have a care philosophy, now what do I do with it?

First, you’ll want to summarize your care philosophy on your resume.

This will give families a quick snapshot of who you are as a nanny.

Then, you want to be prepared to talk about your care philosophy with families, even if they’re not the ones who bring it up.

Make sure to find a way to work in that information about your care philosophy during the interview at some point.

If the interview doesn’t naturally take you there, be proactive in telling the nanny family about your care philosophy.

I also want to point out that it’s really important to re-evaluate that care philosophy from time to time.

Take advantage of self-learning by following childcare or early childhood education thought leaders on social media.

I also recommend taking advantage of continuing education opportunities.

They don’t land in your lap, make sure you do some research and seek those out.

Sometimes, families are willing to cover the cost of these classes while you’re working with them.

And you’ll want to make sure to add any of these classes or certifications to your resume or your nanny portfolio.
