Welcome back everyone! It’s Casey with Nanny Parent Connection back with this week’s video.
As pay rates for nannies in the Puget Sound region have continued to increase since the COVID pandemic, we started kicking around an interesting question.
Is Seattle now the most expensive market for nanny care in the United States?
In past years, cities like New York and San Francisco held the title for highest average nanny pay rates in the nation. But as our team and many of you have noticed, pay rates continue to march upwards in our region with no end in sight.
Our team spent the last three weeks researching historical data and speaking with nannies and child care agencies across America about nanny pay rates in their areas.

Welcome back, everyone! It’s Casey with Nanny Parent Connection, back with this week’s video.
As pay rates for nannies in the Puget Sound region have continued to increase since the COVID pandemic, we started kicking around an interesting question:
Is Seattle now the most expensive market for nanny care in the United States?
In past years, cities like New York and San Francisco held the title for the highest average nanny pay rates in the nation.
But, as our team and many of you have noticed, pay rates continue to march up in our region with no end in sight.
Our team spent the last three weeks researching historical data and speaking with nannies and childcare agencies across America about nanny pay rates in their areas.
We found that Seattle, long celebrated for its tech innovations and picturesque views, now leads the nation in a different category: the highest average nanny costs.
As of 2024, our region is at the forefront of a rising trend that sees families grappling with skyrocketing childcare expenses.
What’s driving these costs, and how does Seattle stack up against other major cities? Let’s discuss.
Please note that all pay rates we discuss in this video are based on a nanny with average experience caring for one child on a regular basis, either part or full-time.
Current Costs in Seattle
Seattle’s nanny market has reached new heights in 2024.
Families hiring a nanny can expect to pay between $24 and $28 per hour.
These figures are not just high; they are the highest in the nation, surpassing other major urban centers renowned for their expensive living conditions.
Historical Context
To understand the scope of Seattle’s current nanny costs, it’s helpful to look at the historical data.
In 2018, hourly rates for nannies in Seattle were between $18 and $21. By 2020, these rates had climbed to $20 to $23 per hour.
The latest data shows a further increase, placing Seattle at the top of the list with rates reaching $24 to $28 per hour.
Factors Driving High Costs
Several key factors contribute to Seattle’s position as the most expensive nanny market:
Tech Boom: The city’s booming tech industry has fueled significant income growth among residents, which in turn has increased the overall cost of living. This economic surge has led to higher wages across various sectors, including childcare.
Bilingual Nannies: There is a rising demand for bilingual nannies to support early language development. Families are willing to pay a premium for this added value, contributing to higher overall nanny costs.
Flexible Scheduling: The need for nannies who offer flexible scheduling has pushed up compensation, as parents seek nannies who can accommodate irregular hours or provide on-call services. The cost of hiring such professionals has increased.
Housing Market: Seattle’s housing market remains one of the most competitive in the country. With high property prices and rental rates, the cost of living has surged, leading to increased wages in various sectors, including childcare.
Comparison with Other Cities
To put Seattle’s nanny costs in perspective, consider how they compare to other major U.S. cities:
New York City: Nanny rates in New York City for 2023 range from $20 to $25 per hour. While New York City is also known for its high nanny costs, Seattle’s average nanny pay range surpasses that of New York.
San Francisco: In San Francisco, nanny rates are between $18 and $24 per hour. Although San Francisco is renowned for its high living expenses, Seattle’s rates are slightly higher.
Los Angeles: Los Angeles nannies earn between $19 and $22 per hour. While costly, Los Angeles does not exceed Seattle’s rates.
Boston, Massachusetts: Boston nannies earn between $18 and $23 per hour.
Miami, Florida: Miami nannies earn between $15 and $20 per hour. Miami has one of the lowest nanny pay rate ranges in the nation.
Denver, Colorado: Denver nannies earn between $17 and $22 per hour.
Chicago, Illinois: Chicago nannies earn between $17 and $22 per hour.
As the numbers show, the Seattle area is now the most expensive city in the United States to hire a nanny.
Impact on Families
For Seattle families, the high cost of childcare presents significant financial challenges.
Many parents are forced to make difficult decisions, balancing the need for quality childcare with the realities of their budgets.
This might mean cutting back on other expenses, reconsidering work-life balance, or seeking alternative childcare solutions such as nanny shares or childcare provided by a family member.
Looking Ahead
Seattle’s status as the city with the highest nanny costs underscores a broader issue of affordability in urban areas with rapidly rising living expenses.
As our city continues to grow, finding solutions to manage the high cost of childcare will be crucial for ensuring that families can thrive in Seattle without sacrificing essential services.
In the meantime, Seattle families and nannies will need to navigate these high costs with careful planning and consideration.
As the city grapples with its new distinction in the childcare market, the search for balance and affordability remains a pressing concern for many.
