Hi everyone, it’s Nea with Nanny Parent Connection, back to discuss a touchy subject.
Childcare is often seen as a fun and rewarding job, but every now and then, situations can arise that test your ability to handle the unexpected.
One such scenario is when parents return home drunk, posing a challenge for sitters and nannies to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in their care.
In this video, we’ll explore the steps a childcare provider can take when faced with this uncomfortable situation.
Step #1: Assess the Situation
The key to handling any unexpected scenario is a calm and composed assessment.
When parents return home in an inebriated state, the child care provider should carefully observe their behavior and determine if they are capable of reasonably caring for their children.
Are they stumbling, slurring their words? These signs can indicate impairment that may compromise their ability to provide proper care.
Step #2: Ensure the Children’s Immediate Safety
The safety of the children is the top priority.
If there are concerns about the parents’ ability to care for their children, the sitter or nanny should take immediate action to ensure their safety.
This may involve politely discouraging the parents from taking charge immediately and suggesting that they rest while the provider continues to look after the children.
Step #3: Communicate Concerns
Open communication is essential in such situations.
The sitter or nanny should express their concerns to the parents in a polite and non-confrontational manner.
It’s important to convey that the well-being of the children is the primary focus and that alternative arrangements may need to be considered.
The provider may feel that they are overstepping boundaries, but the immediate safety of the children should trump any feelings of uncomfortableness or fear.
Step #4: Contact Emergency Contacts
If the parents are unable to care for their children due to intoxication, the nanny or sitter should contact the emergency contacts provided by the parents.
Keeping a list of emergency contacts is crucial for moments like these as it ensures a quick and effective response to unexpected situations.

Step #5: Stay Calm and Reassure the Children
If the children are awake, they may pick up on tension or uncertainty between the parents and child care provider.
The nanny or sitter should strive to keep the atmosphere calm and reassure the children that everything is okay.
This helps maintain a sense of security for the kids during what might be a confusing situation.
Step #6: Document the Situation
In more serious cases, it may be necessary to document the events as they unfold.
This documentation could include a record of the parents’ behavior, any conversations held, and the actions taken by the provider.
While this may seem extreme, it can be valuable if legal or Child Protective Services become involved.
Step #7: Know Emergency Procedures
A responsible provider should always be familiar with emergency procedures, including knowing the emergency contact numbers, the location of first aid supplies, and any specific instructions provided by the parents.
Being prepared ensures a more efficient response in critical situations.
Working as a sitter or nanny comes with its challenges, and handling situations where parents return home drunk is undoubtedly one of them.
A responsible provider prioritizes the safety and well-being of the children, communicates openly with the parents, and takes appropriate action to ensure a secure environment.
By staying calm, assessing the situation, and following established emergency procedures, the provider can navigate these uncomfortable scenarios with professionalism and care.
