Meet Susanna Williams, our amazing Learning Guide Coordinator!
When we launched our Learning Guide Service, we felt strongly that the individual “matching” families with Learning Guides needed to have a strong background in teaching and working with children. Who better to find and match you with a Learning Guide than an actual teacher and school administrator!
Susanna tried very hard to avoid her destiny. She majored in politics at Earlham College. She moved to Washington, DC. She started babysitting for her Brookings Institution colleagues’ young children… and then she realized that she had no choice but to accept her fate as a fifth-generation educator. Susanna earned a master’s in Early Childhood & Elementary Education at Bank Street Graduate School of Education. She taught K – 4th grades for six years (Bancroft School, UCDS) before she moved into school administration (Soundview School, Kennedy Catholic)… but Susanna will always be a 3rd grade teacher at heart.
After serving as the College Relations Director for Renton Technical College, Susanna was recruited to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Postsecondary Success initiative. She launched a campaign to transform higher education in the United States to better serve low-income students and then continued that work as an independent consultant.
In 2011, Susanna was selected as a German Marshall Fellow. She is a member of the Nation Swell Council.

Frequently asked questions
COVID-19 SAFETY
What safety precautions are in place?
Safety is the first thing on everybody’s mind. This is the biggest and hardest group project any of us have worked on. Keeping each other healthy requires responsibility, communication, and trust. We ask all families and Learning Guides the same questions about their COVID precautions.
In addition to following all CDC guidelines regarding wearing masks in public enclosed spaces, regular hand washing for at least 20 seconds, and avoiding touching your face, we make the following expectations clear:
We request that all Learning Guides and families commit to avoiding large groups of people in unmasked settings.
- We also ask that you commit to communicating immediately with each other about any changes in your health, no matter how insignificant your cough or sore throat might seem.
Families and Learning Guides are asked about their exposure risk and personal COVID protocols during interviews and that information is shared before a match is made to assure alignment. Be COVID responsible. Help us keep each other safe
If a quarantine is established in my area and we can no longer have our Learning Guide come to our home, how will this work?
Learning Guides should be considered part of your family group, but if restrictions are established preventing your Learning Guide from coming to your home, we suggest putting your working agreement on pause.
What happens if someone get sick?
Communicate immediately with each other. Keep everyone updated so that you can all make the best decision for the safety of all.
FINANCIAL
What does this cost?
The Learning Guide membership fee is $999.99/year. This includes 365/7 support from our team if you are having an issue with your Learning Guide or need a replacement. We also provide ongoing support and resources to your Learning Guide as long as your membership is active.
What is included in a membership?
Your membership includes access to our expert team who will work with your family to find the right Learning Guide for your family. We find and complete multiple interviews with each Learning Guide candidate. We verify education, experience, First Aid/CPR certification and ensure a clear background check for all of our Learning Guide candidates, at no additional cost to you.
Can we get a refund?
Yes, we can issue you a refund in two cases:
1) If, within 24 hours of purchasing a Learning Guide membership, you decide that this service will not work for you, or;
2) If our team has not presented any Learning Guide candidates to you within thirty (30) days from the date that you purchased the Learning Guide membership.
If any of the above events have occurred, immediately contact us via email by clicking here with your name, email address, mailing address and transaction number (found at the bottom of the emailed receipt that was sent to you after purchasing). We will issue you a full and complete refund of your Learning Guide membership fee within four (4) to six (6) business days.
How much do Learning Guides charge per hour?
Pay rates are determined through mutual agreement of the family and Learning Guide. Depending on your location, number of children, and desired Learning Guide experience level, expect to pay between $20 and $50/hour.
LEARNING GUIDES
What are the requirements to become a Learning Guide?
We require a minimum of a post-secondary degree or certificate and at least two years of experience working with children in learning settings. All Learning Guides must pass a thorough nationwide background check, which is included with your Learning Guide membership and provide education transcripts and teaching/childcare references for our team to verify. We also require that all Learning Guides have a valid First Aid/CPR certification. We want your children to be safe.
How do you select Learning Guides?
We are actively searching for great Learning Guide candidates. We look for Learning Guide candidates who have experience working with children in learning settings. We look for people who are great with kids and who respect them as the “emerging adults” they are. We look for creativity, independence, flexibility, and a basic sense of fun. We look for maturity, confidence, and diverse backgrounds. But, above all, we look for good human beings.
How long will it take to find our Learning Guide?
We are actively recruiting Learning Guides every day but the process isn’t simple – finding the right Learning Guide for your situation requires matching:
– Budget / rates
– Schedule / desired hours
– Children’s ages / Learning Guide’s experience
– Location
– COVID precautions
– Additional requests from the family and/or Learning Guide
We’ll do our best to match you as soon as possible. The process might take up to three or four weeks, so please be patient.
Will we get to interview the Learning Guide?
Yes. Once we have identified a potential Learning Guide for you, you will receive an email from our team describing the Learning Guide and sharing their resume. We will also send an email to the Learning Guide describing your family. If you are both interested in talking, you will be introduced by email and you can take it from there.
How long of a Learning Guide contract is required?
We suggest families and Learning Guides commit to a minimum three-month. But the exact length of the contract is up to each specific family and Learning Guide.
How are Learning Guides paid?
Learning Guides are paid directly by your family as a household employee or as an independent contractor depending on your local and state laws.
Are Learning Guides eligible for benefits?
You may wish to offer your Learning Guide guaranteed hours, a stipend for health insurance as well as paid time off.
Do you run background checks on Learning Guides?
Yes, we run a top tier Premium Plus background check on each of our Learning Guides as part of your membership. This is one of the most comprehensive childcare background checks available in the United States today.
What if the Learning Guide ends up not being a good fit?
We want to know immediately. We’ll get to work immediately to find you the right match. (Learning Guides, this goes for you, too. We want you to be happy!)
